Abstract:

Situated on a national highway between Yverdon and Morat, the Mentue Bridge crosses a deep eroded valley at a maximum height of 100 m. The exceptional height of the structure, the precarious geological conditions encountered on the sides of the valley, and the horizontal curve of the road were the main constraints of the project. The Mentue Bridge shows that it is possible to build a structure that blends perfectly into an impressive landscape despite the adoption of a standard structural concept and a conventional construction method. Considering the spans that were chosen and the geometrical constraints, the bridge, at a cost of USD 1350/m² deck, can be regarded as economical.
