Abstract: Simulation of poly- and monodispersed granular material. Part I: Structure characteristics

The paper presents two part investigation into the behaviour of poly- and monodispersed granular material applying the discrete element method (DEM). Granular aggregates involve the compaction of spherical particles within the wall-bounded domain under gravity force and randomly induced small velocities of the grains.

Part I discusses the modelling technique and correctness of the obtained results and analyzes the characteristics of granular material structure after the compaction process relying on the coordination number, particle contacting forces and volume fraction distribution. Referring to the stressed arches, the locked clusters of granular material containing small particles were detected. For the purpose of providing the characterization of micro and macrostates of these clusters, Hamiltonian mechanics was introduced.
