Abstract: Describes two of the uses of concrete in the development of a rapid transit system for Chicago, III. The use of median right-of-ways in existing expressways required special barriers in certain locations to protect people and property from possible harm due to automobile accidents. A precast unit that was selected for this purpose is described. Wood ties for the tracks were fficult to obtain and expensive. The search for alternates is discussed and two types of concrete ties were investigated. The ties are described and the manufacture of the tie chosen is discussed.
