Abstract:

A comparative study of the response reduction factors of the NCSE-02 code and the Eurocode-8

In the procedures of seismic analysis and design of structures, it is necessary to introduce simplifications or approximations which allow achieving the equivalence between results of elastic analysis, on which are based the seismic codes, with results obtained considering the nonlinear, plastic, behavior of structures, which correspond to their real behavior when subjected to strong earthquake actions. One of these simplifications consists of designing the structures in such a way to assure a lateral strength lower than the elastic one. This lateral strength is obtained by applying calculated lateral loads using inelastic design spectra, obtained by dividing the elastic ones by response reduction factors, also known as R factors. In this study an exhaustive revision of the state-of-the-art of these response reduction factors is made, which starts from its original proposal, goes through its implementation into seismic design codes, until arriving to new proposals of application. Finally, in order to be able to reach a better understanding of the topic, a comparative study between the response reduction corresponding to the Spanish code NCSE-02 and to the Erocode-8 is made.
