Abstract:

This paper describes the basic ideas for the conceptual design of the extended part of Chapin Stadium built in 2002, bearing in mind the complex boundary conditions. Since the extension leads to an important increase of the internal forces, challenging problems emerged in relation to the existing structure. The adopted solutions are emphasised. The stadium required the addition of a new roof as well as a new gallery to the existing grandstand. Accesses for the public were also reorganised and a hotel and sports centre integrated into the stadium.
