Assessment of historical bridge bearings — The contact problem.This paper tackles the contact problem, the weak point of historical bridge bearings made of cast iron and early steel. At first historical approaches dealing with the contact problem and general contact matters are discussed. To improve the current method of calculation, thereafter the link between Hertzian contact stress and von-Mises (equivalent) stress is demonstrated by analytical and numerical calculations. |
