Not far from Kiel, the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein, the first Levensau High Bridge (Hochbruecke Levensau) built in 1894, is being replaced by a combined rail and road steel bridge with a span of over 241 m. During construction special attention was paid to the maintenance of railway traffic and shipping and to the preservation of a winter hibernation site for bats.
