Abstract: |
The Ayunose Bridge crosses the Midorikawa Valley south of Mount Aso, an active volcano. Located in an area known for historical stone bridges such as Tsujunkyo Bridge, the Ayunose Bridge forms part of Kumamoto Artpolis, a public project consisting of a series of structures as cultural gifts for future generations. The bridge was designed to emphasise the beauty of the valley below, and to provide a viewpoint for visitors. Extensive study, using sketches, drawing, and models, permitted developing a bridge structure well integrated in the landscape - now a symbol of the region. |
