The principle of the radial press for the design of highly loaded pressure shafts and headrace tunnels has been known since 1954 and has been further developed by Tiwag - Tiroler Wasserkraft AG and used successfully many times on the most varied power station projects. The radial press is a large-scale test apparatus for the determination of the contribution of the rock mass to the lining of pressure tunnels and shafts. A 2 m long section of a circular tunnel is subjected to radially symmetrical loading of up to 100 bar. The radial displacements of the loaded tunnel section are measured with their directional orientation related to the tunnel centreline at many cross-sections and thus deliver direct information about anisotropy and the E and V moduli of the rock mass. The system control and data recording of the Tiwag radial press has now been automated and thus brought up to the latest standards. The measured data is recorded, visualised and archived by special software and remains available for specific evaluation purposes. Both the effectiveness of the test performance and the measurement precision have been improved by this automation and the use of new sensor technology. For the planned Kühtai pumped storage station, the revised and automated radial press was successfully used in spring/summer 2011 at two measurement locations in the Längental exploration tunnel. The radial press in its new form is being used increasingly on all the large design projects of the Tiroler Wasserkraft AG and will thus continue to contribute to the economic design of pressure tunnels and steel linings. |
