Abstract: Communities of construction tradesmen in Northern Italy played a significant intermediary role between public institutions, workers, and clients. The interests of the commune were guaranteed by the trade associations; the members of these were provided with equal rights by the community without favoring the richest craftsmen or those who were not registered with it. Ultimately, buyers could be certain of the quality of the material and the work done.
