Abstract:

Non-linear inelastic analysis of lateral buckling in steel arches

In this article curved graphs are proposed that relate the shape of the box cross section of an arch with the actual ultimate lateral strenght for different values of lenght, support conditions and height of the cross section. For that, it has been necesary to determine the actual ultimate lateral strenght of a series of arches and compare the results obtained with those provided by other investigators.Elastic plastic steel material, geometric nonlinearity hypotheses, residual stresses and initial lateral deflection are all taken into consideration with respect to the real ultimate lateral strength. The results obtained are compared with those deduced in 1 977 by Sakimoto and Komatsu. The influence of the raise to span ratio determines that for reduced slenderness, qu/qp is bigger for f/L=0,2 than for f/L=0,1; for big slenderness, qu/qp keeps almost constant. As conclusion, a previous arch calculation method for lateral buckling has been determined, an interaction surface with the qu/qp, L and a" parameters for clamped and hinged arches."
