Experimental analysis of the wind induced vibrations of the bridge over the river Tagus (?Alconétar Arches?)

This paper describes the experimental analysis of the vibrations of the Alconétar Arches, located in La Plata dual carriageway over the river Tagus. These vibrations were induced in the arches that support the deck by a vortex shedding phenomenon under wind flow and have been solved by means of curved deflectors arranged on the arches flanges. The structural behaviour of the bridge has been specifically monitored to survey the reduction of the phenomenon and to take a decision on the safety of the bridge during the construction phase and during its design life.
