Abstract:

Aging of PET geodrids

Due to hydrolytic aging of the polyester material the tensile strength of PET-geogrids will change with time. According to the design recommendations (EBGEO) of the German Geotechnical Society DGGT this effect has to be taken into account by a factor of reduction. In principle the determination of the factor for chemical degradation is described in ISO/TR 20432. However, there is a considerable discretionary leeway in realizing the procedure for a special type of product. The questions, which occur from this for PET-geogrids, will be discussed in detail. Against this background building stones of a well-defined procedure are suggested, which considers not only mechanical degradation but also degradation in molecular weight.
