Abstract: |
This paper introduces a risk-based approach to bridge management as implemented by the Department of Transportation of the Autonomous Province of Trento (APT). The APT Bridge Management System (BMS) has been operational since 2004 and inspections have been carried out on the whole bridge stock (more than 1000 bridges). The data collected by adequately trained inspectors are gathered in a Data Base and are automatically analyzed by the system using a number of mathematical models. These models have been developed by DIMS with the following objectives: calculating the reliability and the risk associated with each bridge, evaluating the evolution in time of the condition state, simulating long-term scenarios for infrastructure development by critically comparing alternative Maintenance, Repair and Reconstruction (MR&R) strategies. This paper illustrates the prioritization model implemented in the APT BMS, based on the concept of total risk. Two examples of real life applications will be presented and analyzed. |
