Abstract:

This paper gives a span limitation of self-anchored cable-stayed bridges from mechanical and economic considerations. The limit span is controlled from economical viewpoint, which is cost comparison between cable-stayed and suspension bridges. From 1200 to 1400-meter span will be the limit. Possibility of further extension by employing partially earth-anchored system is presented. The mechanical advantage of this system is minor and, taking into account of constructability, it is given that realization from practical viewpoint will be hopeless.
