Abstract: |
This paper presents a start of a series of studies on the seismic design of high-rise tower for cable stayed bridges under strong earthquakes. One practical cable stayed bridge with 730m long main span and two over 200m high-rise towers is selected for this study. The preliminary results show that compared to piers, tower is more vulnerable to pulse like earthquake, and may yield to develop plasticity at certain locations. In addition, viscous dampers may not so effect as they do under site specific ones, hence re-optimization of damper parameters or reconsideration of other energy disserpation devices will be needed if such strong earthquakes are likely to happen. |
