Abstract:

In this paper several case studies assessing the seismic performance of existing bridges in Croatia, either during the regular operation or immediately after the earthquake, will be overviewed to contemplate about their shortcomings versus hidden reserves. Seismic assessment during the regular operation will be analysed through four casestudy bridges. All bridges are located in the area of high seismic activity with ag=0.2g - 0.3g. On the other hand, post-earthquake-rapid-damage- assessment of eight bridges in Glina County performed immediately after the devastating ML=6.2earthquake, in 2020, will be overviewed. Based on all above-mentioned case-studies, including additional experience of the Chair for bridges in the last two decades of research and professional work, the shortcomings and hidden reserves of existing bridges will be compared revealing the lessons learned for the design and rehabilitation of bridges in seismic prone areas.
