Abstract:

The damage investigation of small to medium-span highway bridges after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake has shown that the sliding between girder and laminated-rubber bearings was a common phenomenon, which caused excessive girder displacement and damages to concrete shear keys, expansion joints, and abutments. The bearing sliding can actually act as isolation for the piers. In this research, experimental works were firstly conducted to investigate the seismic performances of bearing sliding and shear keys. Then the effect of shear keys on the seismic performance of the bridge was investigated through parametric study. It is concluded that if the shear keys are properly designed, the bearing displacement can be greatly reduced and the piers can remain essentially elastic. Further, the obtained design parameters of shear keys were validated when the ground motion intensity and the pier height vary.
