Abstract:

This paper analyzes the problems of research and graphical reconstruction of little-known log cliffside architecture. Its uniqueness lies in the opportunity it provides for a highly accurate reconstruction of multistoried wooden architecture from the ninth to thirteenth centuries, the period from which there are no extant examples of wooden buildings. This is possible due to the thousands of cliffside traces chiselled into the rock surface of the large stone outcrops to receive the ends of logs and support beams for the wooden structures. Previous investigations by archaeologist Mykhailo Rozhko are being reviewed, reanalyzed and supplemented with new approaches and technologies such as laser scanning, three-dimensional modelling, geographic information system and computer-assisted design.
