Abstract:

Offsetting the axis of an otherwise conventional steel brace with respect to the forces’ line of action modifies its force-displacement response and brings about significant benefits for earthquake- resistant design. When used in multi-storey Frames with Intentionally Eccentric Braces (FIEBs), the adjustable eccentricity of Braces with Intentional Eccentricity (BIEs) grants a better control over the dynamic behaviour of the structure and reduces incidental overstrength.

In this article, the suitability of round Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) and W shapes as bracing members in FIEBs is investigated. To this end, prototype buildings of varying height with round HSS and W shape-based FIEBs as seismic-force-resisting systems are designed and subjected to Non- Linear Response-History Analysis (NLRHA). The resulting buildings offer a satisfactory response to earthquake loading, indicating that the considered sections are apt for use as BIEs in FIEBs.
