Abstract: This paper extends the Evolutionary Structural Optimization method to the form finding of structures with compression-only or tension-only elements. A computer code has been developed for 2D and 3D topological structural design using both von Mises and compression/tension stress criteria. Several examples are presented to illustrate the method, which can be applied to the conceptual design of arches, tied arches, cable-stayed and suspension bridges.
