Abstract:

This paper summarizes the findings of an analysis of the relative CO2 emissions associated with different approaches to the design of floor slabs in building construction, including the beams and columns that support the floor. Four approaches, including innovative methods such as re-use of concrete slab with the slab elements supported by post-tensioned beams, were assessed, and compared with a standard reference design. The analysis concluded that upfront carbon emissions may be drastically reduced by selecting suitable approaches to building construction. For example, a 70% reduction in these emissions was calculated for the approach involving re-use slab and post- tensioned beams, if recycled materials are used – a reduction that even exceeds the carbon saving associated with wood-based construction.
