Abstract: Eurasia Tunnel is a submarine double-decker road tunnel underneath the Bosphorus. It is part of the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project: it connects the Asian side and the European one of Istanbul and it is 14.6 km long. The underground section is about 5.4 km long: 3.3 km have been excavated by Mixshield TBM. The tunnel is to be considered unique and problematic due to the large excavation diameter (13.7 m), the high pressures (11 bar), the heterogeneity of the soil (soft and hard rock basement and marine sediments with erratic boulders), the high permeability and the seismic conditions. In fact, the tunnel lies in a geological zone of high seismicity, located parallel to the Anatolia plate-boundary fault in the Marmara Sea (17 km offshore). Therefore, the project implementation required specific seismic joints located inside special metallic rings, allowing structural deformation under the action caused by an eventual earthquake.
