Abstract:

Recent research undertaken on behalf of GB railway stakeholders by RSSB has ascertained that the relevant design guidance contained in EN 1991-2:2003 is unduly conservative for typical GB railway infrastructure. The paper examines the requirements in the standard and reviews the historical basis of the requirements. Research studies currently underway to remedy the deficiencies are described and an indication is given of the potential cost benefit of deriving GB specific design rules.
