Abstract: This papers deals with the design of damping systems. The focus is on systems that mitigate the response under dynamic crowd loading, most of the information is however of general validity. The main issues that are likely to be involved in the design of damping systems are reviewed: design density; calculation of damping requirement; the rationale for the choice of damping devices; assessment of the efficiency of the damping system and optimisation of its performance; specifications for the dampers and testing.
