Abstract:

I will analyze the construction of the Saint Felix church tower in Girona during the fourteenth century. Specifically, this study will focus on the workers, the materials and the auxiliary means used. To this end, I have consulted the building records of the church, an indispensable documentary source of the building's history. After an introduction describing the chronology of the construction work of the church, I analyze the data we have regarding the anonymous, and sometimes named, builders who worked there: their origin, working hours, the family relationships, wages and so on. In this section, I will highlight the importance of the work of women during construction which, at the time, was highly unusual, be it in Girona, Catalonia, Spain or indeed, anywhere else in Europe. With regard to materials, I shall focus on the most important data provided by the building records, such as quality, price, origin, transportation, etc. Finally, I will describe the characteristics, cost, ownership and function of the equipment used in construction.
