Abstract: |
Chiswick Park Footbridge is an elegant three-span network arch structure providing an important new pedestrian link between Chiswick Business Park and the surrounding community and transport links. The bridge is fully accessible to all and spans a roadway, car park, rail line and the peak of the Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve, providing a safe and engaging route instead of the previous lengthy mixture of urban obstacles. The article explains how this context and a strong collaborative approach between architects and designers informed the design and material choice which were driven by pedestrian experience, quality, maximum efficiency and minimal maintenance; the latter being critical in the public realm and when crossing live railways. Engineering innovation was at the heart of the scheme and was evident in the final design, the means of fabrication and the assembly on site. The result is a stunning piece of public realm, ensuring a strong continuous link through the landscape and into the community beyond. |
