Abstract:

The Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina has two precast segmental bridges, the Bridge over Hwy I-26 and the Laurel Fork River Bridge, that share design and construction aspects. They are defined by their complexity within their construction sequences, strict environmental protection requirements, and limited construction equipment access. The innovative use of automation in engineering production, specialized equipment, BIM technology, and unique temporary falsework were key elements in the project. In addition, project efficiencies and cost-saving measures between the two bridges have been beneficial for the project team and owner for submittal delivery. The project team was able to reuse and recycle various elements between projects accelerating engineering production to provide a great example of the natural benefits of segmental bridge construction for a project team.
