Abstract:

Mechanical properties of bamboo have not been precisely explored. To use bamboo as building construction material, it is necessary to study how the mechanical properties depend on seasons of sampling, region, and retention period. In particular, with aging after sampling, bamboo changes its color and water content ratio and becomes easy to crack. It should be kept in mind when using bamboo for structural element, therefore, that it is a material that suffers aged degradation and changes in its strength or stiffness.

We built a building composed of bamboo structure in 2011, and have kept observing its visible changes or damages, and measured microtremor on it at regular intervals. In this article, influence of aging to strength and stiffness is investigated on the basis of the monitoring results.
