December 1999

The design team lead by Sir Michael Hopkins is chosen after a RIBA-approved competition.

February 2002

The construction contract is awarded to MJ Gleeson Group.

March 2002

Riddel House (built in the 1930s to accommodate nurses) is demolished to make room for the new children's hospital.

September 2002

Foundations are completed.

October 2002

Work on the concrete structure of the building begins.

March 2003

Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, lays the foundation stone of the new hospital.

November 2003

Topping-out ceremony.

March 2005

Construction is completed.

31 October 2005

Opening of the fully operational hospital.
