Notes

The club [Arsenal FC] wanted a new stadium to be close to the old one to maintain their supporters and the only site available was squeezed between two railway lines. The designers responded to these requirements by shoe - horning the seating bowl into the available space. They also had to take account of the construction sequence in the design of the structure, since some site areas would not be freed up until later. The roof in particular had tight height restrictions and had to be constructed in halves. The solution was to use three chord steel trusses that would be self - stable during construction. The primary truss spanned 210 m and was temporarily propped in the centre. The secondary trusses spanning between the primaries and the tertiary trusses spanning to the sides were also three chord trusses so required no intermediate propping. The large steel trusses were brought to site as individual elements and assembled.
