Abstract:

"Energieklinker" - A system to utilize the solar heat radiation on clinker façades.

The featured research project was aiming to develop and test a specially modified clinker façade which would convert solar irradiation on the façade into energy suitable for heating purposes. The system was tested in medium and large scale experimental setups under real weather conditions. The main objective was to measure the energy extraction potential but also all other issues regarding the technical feasibility had to be taken into account. A very strong focus was laid on a practicable installation method using established and standardized construction products. For a sunny winter day an energy extraction potential of 0.4 kWh/m² of façade and day was measured. During summer days, an extraction potential of up to 2.6 kWh/(m²·d) could be observed. Initial findings allow the assumption that this energy could be utilized by applying a heat pump.
