New pedestrian overpass in Lyngby near Copenhagen

Abstract:

The bridge in figure 1 is a replacement of a temporary timber bridge that was erected in 1956. The new bridge connects the rail station “Jaegersborg Station” with the area east of the motorway between Copenhagen and Helsingoer and was completed in the summer of 2013.

The vision for The Danish Road Directorate was to have a significant structure that would mark the transition from the countryside to the urban Copenhagen area.

Due to the heavy traffic on the motorway, the project team decided to design a bridge with a prefabricated superstructure which could be installed during total cl osure of the motorway in a few nights where the traffic intensity was low.

A low construction height is dictated by the site constraints, such as the existing geometry for the motorway, a train station and a path on the east side. This narrowed the altern atives down to allow a beam or a cable stayed bridge.

Together with the architects the bridge was designed as a two span (27 m and 25 m respectively) double steel box girder bridge with variable height of the parapet and an inclined outer face. The bridge is placed with a 60m radius curvature in plan. As a result of the slim design and the large span, tuned mass dampers were designed and installed.
