Abstract: Pedestrian loading of a footbridge depends on the characteristics of the walking forces, but even more on the mechanisms with which the walkers interact with the bridge. In this paper some characteristics of the lateral walking forces are presented, as measured from tests carried out using an instrumented treadmill. The possible mechanisms of crowd-bridge interaction are then examined. Finally, for the particular case in which no synchronisation phenomena take place, a simple approach is shown to predict the bridge response, which can also be used to check the possibility of occurrence of a crowd-structure synchronisation, but not to calculate the response in case it occurred.
