Abstract:

The case study presents the design and realisation process of the freeform vault structure serving as a major protective canopy for a bus and tram terminal at the public space Muechner Freiheit, Munich. In an extensive portrait the occurring decision making process, intrinsic interdependencies and constraints ranging from planning, scripting, workflow, legal regulations, and prefabrication to construction site will be revealed. Main focus is on the architectural engineering, the morphological development of the space structure itself and finally on the construction. The realisation of this transportation building with its lightweight appearance can be seen as an innovative and prototypical solution for a large scale double curved steel structure.
