Abstract:

This paper presents the development of a spindle shaped deployable Tensairity beam. The foldable truss system is introduced and the adaptations made to improve the kinematic behaviour of this mechanism are discussed. The iterations in the design of the bar mechanism are presented, as well the detailing of the hinges of this mechanism. Finally, a small (2 m) and full scale (5 m) prototype of the deployable Tensairity beam are illustrated.
