Abstract:

MERO-type connector is a type of thread fastener that is used in space structures. It has been widely used in double-layer and multi-layer grids. It is very important to estimate the axial stiffness of joint which should be reflected in the evaluation of overall structural behaviour. It is well-known that bolt’s tightness has a significant effect on a thread fastener’s behaviour. In this paper, a three- dimensional finite element method is established to observe tightening process of joint, and investigating the effects of bolt’s tightness on tension force-displacement relation of MERO-type connector. Since the similarity between numerical results and experimental results was found to be satisfactory, it is concluded that, the proposed model’s principles are efficient for predicting load- displacement curve of joint under tightening.
