Taper suspension bridges are a special type of bridge design using the "taper principle" patented by James Dredge in 1836. The suspension system is similar to a cantilever bridge where the span between the pylons is suspended from either side instead of a continuous chain. The number of chains increases with each diagonal hanger thus increasing the width of the chain towards the pylons.
