Abstrait: A pedestrian bridge joins two historically divided communities, and forms the centrepiece of a 1.6km long creekside park through historic Frederick, Maryland, USA. Footbridges can be pivotal in creating a safe, pleasant environment for pedestrians and bicyclists. The new self-anchored suspension bridge at Carroll Creek spans 36 meters, and features a single pylon and a curved, Y-shaped alignment. The bridge type required careful detailing, especially of foundations, anchorage plates and cable clamps, in order to meet technical and aesthetic requirements. This paper will discuss the engineering basis for the structural form, and this landmark structure will be compared to other bridge types. The technical challenges of the project will be depicted, as well as the structural details developed to address these challenges. Additionally, hand calculations will be compared to nonlinear computer analysis to address the structural behaviour of self-anchored suspension bridges and the need to perform appropriate computer analyses even for short spans.
