Abstrait:

The refurbishment of a footbridge at a railway station junction is presented. Constructed in the 1970s, the footbridge structure was highly economical, as were all structures at that time. It utilised extremely thin concrete decks of low concrete grades. Due to the economies in cost and construction, detailing of the structure was very poor. The structure aged quickly and occasional repairs were necessary. Low maintenance and the introduction of de-icing salt in recent decades accelerated the deterioration of the concrete elements, i.e. slab decks and stairs. The slab decks, which were very thin, became severely corroded and in places collapsed entirely. The paper presents the refurbishment of the footbridge structure, which entailed replacing the damaged and deficient structural elements and accessories. The footbridge received a new cast-in-situ slab deck which was made composite with steel beams; new shear connectors were designed. Thicker slabs of a higher concrete grade were used in the deck. The number of expansion joints in the deck and stairs was reduced.
