The Taggenbrunn Bridge is in fact two bridges of the same shape, the first erected in 1905, the second in 1911. To upgrade the bridge, it was decided to reinforce the foundations and the arched approach spans, and to totally replace the steel structure with a new one. As is now usual in Austria, this work could begin only after completing a range of environmental studies. The owner investigated several solutions in order to fulfill both the operational and environmental demands. It was decided to retain the basic look, layout and construction of piers, abutments and the masonry approach spans and to totally replace the steel construction of the bridge itself. |
