Fritz Leonhardt as a Young Engineer - Early Experiences in Long Span Bridge Design and Construction

Fritz Leonhardt (1909-1999) worked almost seven decades as a civil engineer. His contributions made him famous and well recognized world wide. He was especially interested in bridge design and construction. Well known are his innovative concepts which have influenced significantly the design of post-tensioned concrete structures and cable-stayed bridges in post war Germany. Less known is the fact that Leonhardt already participated in major projects before 1945. Two of those projects are selected and described here: the construction of the suspension bridge Cologne-Rhodenkirchen (1938-1941) and his designs for the Elbe suspension bridge in Hamburg (1938-1941).
