Bridges are essential infrastructure of significant benefit to society, in providing links between two geographical areas, improving connectivity and creating a sense of community. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value which is derived from carrying out a full scale feasibility study for a bridge before embarking on design and construction. This is illustrated by means of a real project for a pedestrian/cyclist bridge currently proposed to cross the River Thames at Nine Elms/Pimlico in London.

It is expected that a bridge over the Thames, in common with many similar bridges in densely populated urban cities, will have major environmental, economic and social impact on ist surrounding area. A feasibility study is therefore an essential and important part of the design process giving significant information and value to the client by identifying unknowns and reducing project risks. For a relatively small initial investment in time and money a carefully constructed feasibility study will identify the cost and benefit of the scheme and will inform the client of the next steps he needs to take in order to realise the project in a sustainable way.
