Thrust lines are widely used in simple diagrams of structures. They show where the forces are. It is not widely recognised that the concept of thrust line only exists in two dimensions. The paper investigates how the concept can be extended into three dimensions. The use of wrench lines is proposed. For about 20 years the author has been using a computer structural analysis progam which displays wrench lines. He discusses an example structure, and shows how the use of wrench lines provides insights for designers. |
