Located at the North of Istanbul near the Black Sea, the Third Bosphorus Bridge, also called Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, has a main span length of 1408 m and a total length of 2260 m. As for the Brooklyn Bridge (New York), the main span is supported on one side by main cables through hangers and on the other side by stay cables. The concrete towers reach 320 m height and the deck, 5.50 m high and 58.50 m wide, supports twice four traffic lanes for international road traffic, two railway tracks and two lateral sidewalks for pedestrians. This specific bridge typology as well as the transversal position of the cable and the large width of the deck leads to particular behaviour during the erection of the main span. This paper aims to present the main alternatives studied and their advantages/disadvantages. |
