Abstrait: Along with the cathedrals in Pisa and Florence, Siena's cathedral Santa Maria Assunta is among the major building projects of medieval Tuscany. Even though there are few records of its early construction history, from 1226/27 on the building itself and the construction process can unambiguously be deducted from written sources. Documented are, amongst others, the number and tasks of the building's craftsmen and their wages, the quantity and quality of building materials delivered and their provenance within the territory of Siena, the city's efforts towards an efficient building management and the involvement of experts in the construction process. Those experts are consulted in 1260 to examine cracks in the new vaulting. In 1322 a commission of experts discussed similar problems concerning the new choir, and when in 1357serious damage appeared on the Duomo Nuovo, the expert's advice was the decisive factor for the complete abandonment of this ambitious project.
