By considering the concrete shrinkage and creep properties, the shortening of core walls and super columns and the related structural responses under long-term gravity loads were thoroughly studied for the Shanghai Tower project. A construction sequence based time varying inelastic analysis procedure was employed to predict the shortening of the core walls and super columns. B3 model was then employed to simulate the shortenings of the reinforced concrete and composite vertical members due to elastic, creep and shrinkage deformation. The influences of the lock-in scheme of the outriggers were also considered in the shortening analysis. The application in the shortening analysis method in the Shanghai Tower shows that the proposed shortening analysis procedure is effective and can be readily employed for the shortening calculation of other super tall buildings.
