Abstrait:

Due to improved possibilities of parametric design and automated production, freeform grid-shells have become very popular in contemporary architecture. In general, the engineer’s task is to transform the desired form into a load bearing structure without losing the architectural vision of a smoothly shaped building envelope and to create a grid that allows for uniform sizes of panels. Moreover, the design of the node connections for the steel bars plays a decisive role in obtaining an economical competitive and aesthetic structure.

Whilst modular systems using universal nodes have been developed recently, the advantages of computationally driven manufacturing allow for customized members and therefore the possibility to omit visible nodes. The new node connector presented in this paper allows for smooth transition of the steels bars and quick assembly on site by using bolted connections. This helps to significantly reduce site work as compared to welded connectors. The new solution has been firstly used for the 17,000 m² roof of a shopping mall in White City, London.
