Abstrait: A 50 m span pre-stressed concrete footbridge named ‘Sakata-Mirai Footbridge has been completed as a result of the innovative design and construction with the application of Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) under the name of Ductal®. Because of the ultra high compressive, flexural and tensile strength, the concrete bridge applying Ductal can enormously reduce the dead weight and this results in that the dimension of the foundation becomes very small. Various kinds of technical trial were challenged in terms of the design concept and the construction method. Authors have developed the material mixture proportions using locally available raw materials and also developed the innovative design and construction method that has never been before. Special features of the technology are; 1) developed application technology for RPC surprisingly reduced the self-weight of bridge to 560kN which is 1/5 of one span ordinary concrete bridge, 2) the total construction cost was reduced by 10% compared with the three spans ordinary concrete bridge because of reduction of self-weight, 3) extremely low height to span ratio could be realized (ratio is 1/91 at end, 1/31 at middle), 4) no passive reinforcement by bars even for the pre-stressing anchorage, 5) all external pre-stressing cables were set with deviators. Those newly developed design and construction technologies have been proved through the actual construction process.
