Many cases of fatigue damage on the orthotropic steel deck structure have been reported [1] [2]. There is a pressing need to identify the causes and to retrofit these bridges for realizing the sustainable structures. This damage is caused by the complex deformation of the deck, which is directly subjected to vehicle loads. This paper discusses our investigation of the mechanism of fatigue damage. The investigation was performed by comparing field measurement results with the analytical results. This paper also discusses the retrofit method for the fatigue cracks on weld bead between the deck plate and trough rib. We addressed the stress reduction by attaching UFC(Ultra- high-strength Fiber-reinforced Concrete: Ex. Ductal) panels onto deck plate. We evaluated its effectiveness by FEM and static load test. Our method could reduce stress at scallop of transverse rib up to 30%. |
